Butsugen Butsumo is an esoteric Buddhist deity symbolizing the work of the Buddha's eye. Shōhōin explains its character as the eye of the Middle Way that sees without bias, and as the mother who gives birth to buddhas. It is handed down as a deity connected not only with the physical eye but with the wisdom that sees things rightly.

This introduction is based on materials from Shōhōin (Tobi Fudō). It is summarized within the scope of the beliefs and traditions those materials convey, and does not present explanations or customs common to all schools, shrines, and temples.

Also depicted in the Ichiji Kinrin Mandala

Butsugen Butsumo is also placed in the Ichiji Kinrin Mandala held by the Nara National Museum. This mandala was used as the principal image of the Ichiji Kinrin rite, which prays for averting disaster and for love and respect. The deity can be understood not only by its name alone but also through its relationships with the other deities that make up the mandala.
