This introduction is based on materials from Shōhōin (Tobi Fudō). It is summarized within the scope of the beliefs and traditions those materials convey, and does not present explanations or customs common to all schools, shrines, and temples.

The buddha of the Pure Land, and the Amida of the mandala

Amida has a place not only in devotion to the buddha of the Western Land of Bliss but also in the mandalas of Esoteric Buddhism. In the three-dimensional mandala of Tō-ji, too, Amida is enshrined as one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas and can be understood through the relationships among deities who express the wisdom of the buddhas.
