History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is regarded as the site of the dwelling of Hikohohodemi no Mikoto when he returned from the palace of the sea god. When worship began here is not clear, but the provincial governor's inspection record "日向土産" states that Aoshima Daimyōjin was revered in the reign of Emperor Saga, and from the Muromachi period onward the Itō family, lords of the domain, are said to have taken charge of rebuilding the shrine buildings and other work.
