History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, in the Heian period, Ashikaga Ietsuna, a seventh-generation descendant of Fujiwara no Hidesato, was falsely accused and went into retreat at the Dazaifu Tenmangū; in gratitude for being cleared, he invited Tenmangū's kami to Tenjinzawa within Karasawa Castle, and this is said to be the beginning. It is said that in Keichō 7 (1602), when the castle lord Sano Yoshinobu moved the castle by order of the shogunate, the shrine was moved to its present site and named Asahimori Tenmangū after the place name.
