History and things to know

Since ancient times it has been connected with the faith that regards the crater of Mt. Aso as a sacred body, and it has been revered as the ichinomiya (chief shrine) of Higo Province. The tower gate and other shrine buildings were damaged in the Kumamoto earthquake, and the progress of the restoration since then is also officially recorded.
