History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it was enshrined in Keichō 8 (1603) by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu as the kami protecting Edo from fire, and in Keichō 15 the main shrine and other buildings were built with donations from the shogun's family. It lost its shrine buildings in great fires of Edo, the Great Kantō Earthquake and the air raids of Shōwa 20; the present main hall, offering hall and worship hall were rebuilt in Shōwa 33 with donations from its parishioners.
