History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated when Ame no Tomi no Mikoto, on the order of Emperor Jinmu, led the Inbe clan of Awa (阿波) to land at the southern tip of the Bōsō Peninsula and enshrined their ancestral kami, Ame no Futotama no Mikoto and Ame no Hiritome no Mikoto, on 男神山 and 女神山 at Mera Beach. In Yōrō 1 it was moved to its present site at the foot of 吾谷山, and the lower shrine was also built. In the Meiji period it was ranked as a Kanpei Taisha, and after the war it became a Beppyō Jinja.
