History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been built in Taika 3 (647) by the family of Prince Yamashiro no Ōe, and later Kōbō Daishi is said to have visited and made it a practice hall of esoteric Buddhism. In the early Edo period Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have stayed here during a falconry outing and granted a plaque, and as Dōai Daishi it was busy with faith in Shōten.

Before you visit

Shōten is enshrined at the Dōai Fujisan Shōten Hall (Dōai 1421-1), a different place from the main hall (Dōai 1221, Kawaguchi).
