History and things to know

According to the shrine's brief chronology, it began in Chōji 1 (1104) when a painted image of Tenjin came down amid thunder and rain. When Minamoto no Yoritomo entered Kamakura it was made the guardian of the kimon (demon gate) of the Ōkura shogunate, and in Genna 8 (1622) Tokugawa Hidetada moved the former building of the Wakamiya of Tsurugaoka Hachimangū to this shrine.
