History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it was formerly called "高寺堂菩提寺" and was destroyed in war in 802; later Kōbō Daishi, traveling through the eastern provinces, is said to have restored it as a Shingon place of practice. It flourished as a place of prayer for Fujiwara no Hidehira, but lost its halls and pagoda with the fall of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan; the present main hall was built in 1686.
