History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded by Prince Shōtoku, later put in order by Gyōki, and to have become a Shingon temple after Kōbō Daishi stopped there. After the fires of war in the Tenshō era, two temples, Taiheizan Muryōju-ji and Fudarakusan Funan-ji, were combined to form the present Funan-ji, and the Kongō Rikishi images of its main gate are Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
