History and things to know
According to the official guide, Gamō Kunpei was a scholar who traveled the country visiting imperial tombs and historic sites and wrote books about them; in the Meiji era his achievements were honored and he was posthumously granted the Senior Fourth Rank. A plan to found a shrine arose on the occasion of his 99th-year memorial festival in Taishō 1, and with the support of the people of the prefecture the main hall was completed in Taishō 15. The annual grand festival is held on July 5, the anniversary of his death.
