History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it was opened in Jōwa 2 (1346) by Tettō Kokushi, the second abbot of Daitoku-ji, and became a Sōtō temple after Zen Master 卍山白道 of Daijō-ji in Kaga became its head priest in Genroku 7 (1694). The main hall was built in the same year, and it has a “blood ceiling” said to come from the remains of Fushimi Castle, as well as the “Window of Enlightenment” and the “Window of Confusion.”
