History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded by Ryōgen (Ganzan Daishi) in Tenroku 2 (971); it was first called 如願寺 and stood near 浅間山. In Genroku 3 the priest 恵観 moved it to its present site to pray for the repose of the local lord Matsudaira Nobuhira, and changed its name to Gugyō-ji. It lost its main hall and other buildings in a fire in Taishō 8, but the principal image is said to have escaped harm.
