History and things to know
According to temple tradition, in the Kōnin era Kōbō Daishi, on his way to the Kantō region, stayed here for about a month and built the temple, and when he departed he carved three seated images of himself from akamegashi wood. Of these, the image of him looking back, reluctant to part, is the principal image, the Mikaeri Kōbō Daishi; it is a hidden image, specially shown on the 21st day of the third month of the old calendar.
