History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened as a place of prayer by Ryōmen Sukuna of Hida in the time of Emperor Nintoku, and in the Heian period the imperial prince-monk Shinnyo, a disciple of Kōbō Daishi, worshipped the principal image of Senju Kannon and named the temple Kesasan Senkō-ji. In Eiroku 7 the entire temple was burned in an invasion by Takeda forces, but the principal image was saved, and the present halls were rebuilt from the Edo period onward.
