History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, after the fall of the Hōjō clan in Genkō 3 (1333), Emperor Go-Daigo ordered Ashikaga Takauji to build it on the site of the residence of the Hōjō regents to mourn their spirits. Its founding priest was Enkan Eichin, and an ordination hall (kaidan-in) was established. In Tenbun 7 (1538) the entire complex of seven halls is said to have burned down.
