History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded in Eishō 2 (1505), with Shimane Sakon, a retainer of Komiyama Danjō, as its patron founder, welcoming the priest Nisshō from Kamakura. The official guide states that the great Ōyama-momiji maple in the grounds became a natural monument in Shōwa 7 but withered in the air raids of Shōwa 20. Matsuo Bashō is said to have stopped here, and a stone monument bearing his haiku remains.
