Enshrined kami: Emperor Sushun, the 32nd emperor

History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, in the reign of Empress Suiko, Prince Shōtoku, remembering his uncle Emperor Sushun, founded it on Chausuyama together with the building of Shitennō-ji. Until about the middle of the Meiji period there was a moat (hori) to the south of the grounds, and crossing (koshi) it to worship is said to be the origin of the shrine's name.
