History and things to know

According to the official history, it was founded in Meiji 27 (1894) within the castle grounds of Odawara, where Sontoku was born, by the shared wish of people of Izu, Mikawa, Tōtōmi, Suruga, Kai and Sagami who revered him. In Meiji 42 the main sanctuary and offering hall were newly built, and the foundation stones of the worship hall are the foundation stones of the rice storehouse in the castle that he opened during the great Tenpō famine.
