History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it is said to have begun when the kami of Kasuga was welcomed from Mount Mikasa in Yamato to pray for a safe childbirth for Fujiwara no Akirakeiko, empress of Emperor Montoku. After almost all of the shrine was burned in the Ōnin–Bunmei wars it was revived, and it is also said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi later ordered Yamauchi Kazutoyo to rebuild it.
