History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, it began when Emperor Tenji, following a divine oracle, sent an imperial envoy to enshrine Iwai Ōkami at the iwakura (sacred rock) on Mount Goryōden in Zeze, and that enshrinement is said to have taken place in the 8th year of Emperor Tenji. Mount Goryōden is regarded as the forbidden ground of the Okumiya, and a place for worship from afar (yōhaijo) is set up on the shrine grounds.
