History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been built in Suiko 2 (594) by Prince Shōtoku to mourn his father, Emperor Yōmei. In Bunji 1 (1185), after the fall of the Heike, Kenreimon-in entered the temple and spent her days praying for the repose of her clan and of Emperor Antoku. In a fire in Heisei 12 (2000) the main hall and the former principal image were damaged; the main hall has been restored in its old style, and a newly made statue is enshrined as the principal image.
