Enshrined kami: First Shrine, Okinagatarashihime no Mikoto (Empress Jingū); Second Shrine, Fujiwara no Hirotsugu Ason

History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated when Empress Jingū climbed Kagamiyama and worshipped the kami of heaven and earth, and after her triumphant return offered a mirror (kagami); the names of the village and the mountain are also said to come from this. The First Shrine is said to have been founded in the ninth year of Emperor Chūai and the Second Shrine in Tenpyō 17, and it was a place of prayer that successive lords of the Karatsu domain visited first of all.

Before you visit

According to the official guide, entering the shrine's address or phone number in a car navigation system tends to guide you to the back of the shrine, so it recommends entering "唐津市鏡1824-2" (Kagami 1824-2, Karatsu).
