History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it was first enshrined at the foot of Kamiyama in the 8th year of Emperor Suinin, and that site is now the auxiliary shrine Yamamiya Jinja. In Jōgan 7 (865), the year after an eruption of Mt. Fuji, it was moved to its present site; under the Engi system it was ranked as a Myōjin Taisha, and in Meiji 4 it became a Kokuhei Chūsha.
