History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded in the mid-Kamakura period as an imperial prayer temple of Emperor Go-Horikawa. It lost its buildings in the Ōnin War, but the principal image, said to be the work of Unkei and his son Tankei, escaped the fire. It is said that later, from the connection that the image served as a substitute for Emperor Go-Mizunoo, it became a sub-temple of Sennyū-ji, the family temple of the imperial household.
