History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened in Kōnin 1 (810) when Kōbō Daishi practiced austerities here. It was abolished for a time with the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji period, but in Meiji 23 (1890) it was revived by inviting the head priest of Akiha-ji; it enshrined Akiha Sanjakubō and changed its mountain name to Akihasan, as it remains today.
