History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, the child of the kami of Kashima and Katori came down to Ōshū by sea, and when the boat was brought to the shore at Ishinomaki and its anchor was raised, it wound up (maki) stones (ishi); this is said to be the origin of the place name Ishinomaki. After the main sanctuary was dismantled because of the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, a ceremony moving the kami into the main sanctuary was held in Reiwa 1 (2019).
