History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began in Wadō 2 when Zaō Gongen of Yoshino was brought to Echigo at the imperial wish of Empress Genmei, and until the Meiji period it was a sacred site of Shinto–Buddhist syncretism called Zaō Gongen. In Ninji 3 it was combined with 又倉神社, and with the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period it was renamed Kinpu Jinja and became the first prefectural shrine (kensha) in Niigata Prefecture.
