History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began around Shōhei 17 (1362), in the Nanboku-chō period, when 沼間将監, head of Numa village, prayed at Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto for his father's recovery from illness; when his father recovered, he welcomed a share of the kami's spirit into his residence. After the shrine buildings were lost in war, it was restored in Bunroku 3 (1594), and from Tenna 3 (1683) it was called Tenjingū.
