History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was opened in Keichō 19 (1614) by the great ascetic 晏清満海 as a lodging for shugendō practitioners, and in the Enpō era its third head priest, 梵冏, converted it to the Jōdo sect. The name Sennichi-ji is said to derive from its founder having completed the thousand-day circumambulation practice (sennichi kaihōgyō) on Mount Hiei, and the present main hall was completed in Shōwa 14.
