History and things to know

According to the temple's engi, when Empress Kōmyō was about to give birth, Gyōki performed a secret rite for safe childbirth at the Shimizu waterfall, and Amida Nyorai appeared. Afterward, by order of the emperor, Gyōki carved a statue of Amida Nyorai from the great cherry tree where the miracle had occurred, and a hall is said to have been built at Ōno.
