History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, Yamato Takeru no Mikoto is said to have met up with his attendants near here during his eastern campaign, and the shrine is said to have originated when a small shrine was later built where he had set up camp. Matsu-sato (the village of waiting) is also said to be the origin of the place name Matsudo. The shrine building is said to have been founded in Kan'ei 3 (1626), and the shrine was once called Mitake Daigongen.
