Enshrined kami: Ame no Mikage no Mikoto

History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, in the time of Emperor Kōrei, Ame no Mikage no Mikoto descended on Mt. Mikamiyama, and for a long time the mountain itself was worshipped as an iwasaka where the kami dwells. It is said that in Yōrō 2 (718) Fujiwara no Fuhito, by imperial command, built shrine buildings at the present site and moved the kami there, and in the Engishiki it was ranked as a Myōjin Taisha. The main sanctuary, from the late Kamakura period, is a National Treasure.
