History and things to know

According to the official guide, it was founded in the Kamakura period on the site of the detached palace that Emperor Go-Toba cherished as his home, to console the spirits of the three emperors who died in Oki, Sado and Awa. The okibumi (testament) bearing Emperor Go-Toba's own handprints is a National Treasure, and in the precincts are a Momoyama-period guest hall (Important Cultural Property), a main sanctuary said to have been moved from the Kyoto Imperial Palace in the early Edo period, and the water of the detached palace, known as a famous spring.
