History and things to know

According to the shrine's guide, before crossing the sea Empress Jingū worshipped the kami of heaven and earth on the summit of Miyajidake and set sail praying for good fortune. Later, in praise of the Empress's achievements, she was made the main kami and enshrined, together with the leaders of the Azumi clan who accompanied her, as the Miyajidake Mihashira no Ōkami (three great kami of Miyajidake).
