History and things to know

According to temple tradition, when Nichiren Daishōnin visited Utsunomiya in Bun'ei 2, the mother of Kimishima Bitchū no Kami became his devotee and received the name Myōkin. It is said that Bitchū no Kami later built the temple to pray for his mother's repose and welcomed Nichiin Shōnin, a disciple of one of Nichiren's disciples, as its founder, and the temple also served for generations as the prayer temple of the lords of Utsunomiya Castle.
