History and things to know
The shrine's history introduces the tradition that the shrine buildings were built, following an oracle of Kumano Gongen, on a sacred site where people prayed to the gods of Nirai Kanai for good catches and abundant harvests. Faith in which ships at Naha Port prayed for safe voyages is also handed down.
