History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, when the general and his wife died in Taishō 1, at a ceremony of worship from afar held at the villa, 手塚元氣, chief priest of Ōtawara Jinja, proposed founding a shrine and gained local support. Permission was received in Taishō 4, the main hall and worship hall were completed the following year, Taishō 5, and the spirits were enshrined in April. The annual festival is held on September 13, the anniversary of their death.
