History and things to know

According to the shrine's account of its history, the deaths of General Nogi and his wife, who followed Emperor Meiji in death on the day of his funeral, led to the building of a shrine in Fushimi Momoyama. The shrine buildings stand near Emperor Meiji's Fushimi Momoyama Mausoleum, facing north as if attending beside the mausoleum.
