History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, after the couple followed Emperor Meiji in death on the day of his state funeral in Taishō 1 (1912), the mayor of Tokyo, Sakatani Yoshirō, and others formed the Chūō Nogikai and enshrined their spirits in a small shrine on the estate. The enshrinement ceremony was held in Taishō 12 (1923); the shrine buildings were lost in the air raids of Shōwa 20, but the main hall, offering hall and worship hall were restored in Shōwa 37.
