Enshrined kami: Ōwatatsumi no Mikoto, Susanoo no Mikoto
History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, it began when, in the 2nd year of Emperor Chūai, Empress Jingū called at this bay, enshrined Watatsumi no Mikoto, taking as the sacred object a spirit stone that had appeared from the sea, and prayed for safe voyages. Her offering of the "Itsu no Takatomo" on her return is said to be the origin of the place name Tomo. Susanoo no Mikoto of the Gion shrine was moved to the present site after a fire in Keichō 4, and in Meiji 9 Watatsumi no Kami was enshrined together with him, the two being worshipped in the same hall.
