History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, when the capital was moved to Heian-kyō, it was one of the shrines built in the four directions to protect the capital, and because it lay to the east of the capital it was called Higashi Tennō. In Jōgan 11 (869) shrine buildings were built by imperial order, and Gion Gozu Tennō is said to have been welcomed from Hiromine in Harima. Rebuilding by Emperor Go-Daigo and repairs by Ashikaga Yoshimasa are also handed down.
