History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in Saikō 2 (855) by Jikaku Daishi as a place of prayer by imperial wish of Emperor Montoku, and was at first a Tendai temple called 天岳院. Later Hōnen Shōnin, out of affection for his teacher Kōen, stopped here and practiced the nenbutsu, and it is said that the present principal image was installed at that time. On this occasion it changed to the Jōdo sect, and its name became Ōshō Kyōin.
