History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, it began in Eikyō 5 (1433) when 上杉憲清, the Kantō Kanrei, restored the site of an abandoned Shingon temple and invited Zen Master 吾寶宗璨 as its founder. Many temples were opened by his disciples. Its buildings were lost to fire in the Bunsei era and in Shōwa 15, and each time they were rebuilt.
