History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is thought to have begun before the Nara period when people who revered the enshrined kami as their ancestor settled in this land and enshrined them. It is listed in the register of kami of the Engishiki as one of the thirteen shrines of Sagami Province; in the Kamakura period a sacred horse was offered in prayer for safe childbirth for Masako, wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and it was later designated a place of prayer for the shogun's family.
