History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began in the late Meiji era when supporters who had moved from Niigata Prefecture to Sapporo built a small shrine on the site of Nakajima Park. Shrine buildings were constructed in Taishō 9, and in Shōwa 45 a divided spirit of Sugawara no Michizane was received from Dazaifu Tenmangū. In Shōwa 60, to mark 75 years since the shrine was established, the sanctuary and the great torii were renewed.

This is a different shrine from Yahiko Jinja (the Ichinomiya of Echigo) in Yahiko village, Niigata Prefecture; it is a Sapporo shrine that enshrines a divided spirit of that shrine.
