History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it was founded in Bunmei 8 (1476) at Kaizuka in Kōjimachi, with Ōta Dōkan as patron founder, and in Keichō 5 (1600) it moved to its present site in Atago along with the construction of the outer moat of Edo Castle. In Meiji 8 the Sōtō school's Senmon Gakuhonkō was opened in the dormitory in its grounds, leading to what later became Komazawa University. It lost its halls and pagoda in the Great Kantō Earthquake, and its buildings were later rebuilt.
