History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it originated when people in ancient times regarded the “seto,” the narrow channel of the inlet where the tide swirled in and out, as a sacred place and worshipped kami there, and ritual objects from the Kofun period have also been found nearby. In the Kamakura period Minamoto no Yoritomo welcomed a divided spirit of Mishima Myōjin of Izu and established the shrine buildings, and in the Edo period Tokugawa Ieyasu donated shrine lands of one hundred koku.
