History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun in Tenpyō 2 (730) when 峡田稲置 and others enshrined Ōtoshi no Kami and Yamato Takeru no Mikoto at Shinobugaoka in Ueno. In the Edo period it moved because of the building of Kan'ei-ji, and in Meiji 5 it was renamed Shitaya Jinja. It lost its shrine building in the Great Kantō Earthquake, and a new shrine building was completed on the present site in Shōwa 9. In the grounds is a stone monument marking the birthplace of yose (variety theaters).
